Out and About at the NBC4 Health and Fitness Expo

Mark your calendar now for the 16th Annual NBC4 Health & Fitness Expo!  It's a Washington tradition and a great way to kick off the New Year.

Join Koshland staff and volunteers as we learn about the role of DNA and infectious diseases in human health.  There will be hands-on science experiments, free DVD giveaways, and much more. The entire event is free, so come check us out at the fair!

Educator Forum: Real World Connections: Environment and Evolution

In celebration of Darwin Day, the Koshland Science Museum will host an interactive forum for middle and high school science educators.  Participants will have the opportunity to speak with researchers about how current scientific research can be used to support their teaching through the study of environmental influences on evolution.

From One, Many: Understanding our Ancestors

What can science tell us about our ancestors? Explore the role of DNA in tracing human ancestry and origins. The event features Dr. Matthew George, a geneticist at Howard University who is analyzing the DNA from bones found in the African burial ground in New York City's Foley Square. He will present his talk, "Mitochondrial Eve" which explores the origins of mankind at 12 noon.  At 2 PM, hear the engaging life story of Dr. Agnes Day, associate professor and chairman of the Department of Microbiology in the College of Medicine at Howard University.

Say Cheese! Understanding the Living Foods We Eat

Fine cheeses are like fine wines: producing and aging them properly is both an art and a science. That's a well known fact in Vermont, the state with the greatest number of artisan cheesemakers per capita, and a leading producer of excellent traditional cheeses and new cheese products.  Join Catherine Donnelly, professor of nutrition and food science at the University of Vermont and the co-director of the Vermont Institute for Artisan Cheese, for a discussion of the microbial science behind all great cheeses.  Be prepared to sample!
