Hands-On Science

Experience new hands-on science activities at the Koshland Science Museum.

Hands-on science activities give visitors a chance to explore science topics while conducting simple, short experiments. Museum volunteers guide visitors through the activities. Please call ahead to find out what activity will be offered during your visit.

Disappearing Coral Reefs

Can increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere harm coral reefs and other forms of sea life? Take part in an activity that demonstrates how ocean water absorbs carbon dioxide and becomes more acidic. See what too much acidity can do to the skeletons and shells of sea life.

Clean Water

Clean water is a basic human need, making low-cost and effective water filtration very important. Create polluted water and then filter it through several systems. Learn about the steps needed to produce clean, drinkable water.

* Call the museum at 202-334-1201 to check on availability and timing of each activity. Activities are not offered every day.
